Building a stronger international school community As we discussed in last week’s blog on assessing your school’s sense of community by surveying your teachers and students for their opinions, principals and school administrators should be prepared to receive some negative feedback. Perhaps it’s a symptom of soliciting opinions, but it’s hard to poll a group without receiving some mixed feedback. That being said, don’t be discouraged. You can use this negative feedback as well as the constructive feedback to build upon your international school’s sense of community. By nature, international schools already may feel fragmented - there are often students and teachers of various cultural backgrounds in attendance, and an international school is distinctly different from local public schools. We’ve included some tips below for establishing and strengthening your school community that shouldn’t take too much administrative effort. Communicate frequently your school’s values - if everyone within a school community understands what values are important, they will become part of the everyday conversations. When students are encouraged to rally around one another and support one another, it’s easier for them to see the value in being more compassionate with one another and building a classroom community. Partner with the community - In order to create a real sense of community or to ensure that your school becomes part of a larger community, it’s important to offer your students and staff a chance to see the community-at-large. If possible, seek opportunities to open your school up to the community or to do activities that will benefit the community (arts events, fundraising, plan day trips to museums, etc). It’s important to show teachers and students that their school is part of a bigger community. Make the classroom a democratic place - when students feel as though they have a say in their classroom activities, it makes them feel that much more engaged in the day to day and in a sense of community. One way to make the classroom a democratic place is to suggest to each of your teachers that they take the time to draft a Classroom Contract at the beginning of the year that everyone will be responsible for upholding. The contract can then be posted in a visible place and reviewed frequently. Then, both students and teachers can feel responsible for making the classroom the best that it can be. Once the contract has been drafted, teachers can then check in to ensure it is being met through class meetings. These meetings can help students and teachers to set classroom norms, goals, and take time to problem solve. They also help to build peer relationships. Using the feedback that you receive from teachers and students to adapt school practices to build a stronger community should become an important focus at any school. It aids in academic achievement and in creating a space where teachers and students feel safe and encouraged to thrive.

What I miss most about living and teaching abroad [with free teach abroad guide] I‘ve only been back in my home country for a year now, yet I often find myself looking back at the time I spent abroad like they were the good old days. Teaching abroad for me was never intended as a lifelong career move. I always knew I’d move back home eventually. Even though I taught abroad for a relatively short period of time in my life - I spent two years in total teaching inSouth Korea and theUK - these two vastly different countries both became my home. It was difficult coming to terms with the fact that that chapter of my life was finally closed. My time abroad, in so many ways, felt like home and there are so many things I miss now that I’m back in Canada. Here are just a few of the things I miss most about living abroad: The feeling of living like a local. Culturally, you might not think Canada and the UK are all that different, seeing as Canada was once a British colony. However, I encountered many differences - especially in terms of lifestyle. I wasn’t going abroad to recreate my life at home, so that didn’t faze me. I made a conscious effort to immerse myself in new cultures. Wherever your teaching abroad journey takes you, I really encourage you to try living like a local. In England, this might be heading out for a 5 pm pint at the pub. In Korea, it could mean singing your heart out at the Nora bang (Korean karaoke rooms). When you get home, these are the thingsyou’ll miss most. Finding an adventure around every corner. Working abroad is all about discovery - discovering things about yourself and discovering a new way of life. I relished the idea of facing new and exciting challenges and seeing how adaptable I became with each passing day. The amazing travel opportunities. Living abroad makes you that much closer to the previously unattainable destinations you’ve dreamed of. Depending on where you’re based, flights in or out of the country can cost very little. What’s more, teaching is a flexible career with built-in regular holidays so it’s well worth making the most of any opportunities to travel. Every six weeks, I was on a plane to my next vacation spot. Traveling opportunities isn’t a luxury that many other jobs afford! Getting to meet new people. Every now and then, I come across a letter from an old student or stumble upon a class photo. It’s natural to miss your students and coworkers that you spent every day with - I’ve always found this to be the hardest part about being a teacher. Year by year, students go on to the next class a little more prepared (thanks to you!) but it can still be tough emotionally. Earning a great salary. In many cases, your international teaching gig turns out to be more financially lucrative than a teaching job in your home country. International programs offer competitive salaries with great benefits packages, including airfare reimbursement, accommodation allowances, health insurance coverage, bonuses and more. Often, it seems like you have to choose between meeting academic goals in a dry, boring way, and developing fun activities that are only marginally educational. However, you can have it both ways. Teachers can encourage a passion for learning in a variety of ways, such as incorporating real-life elements into study and encouraging students personal interests. Encourage passion for learning by assigning creative assessments Traditional assessment methods include exams, long and short essays, science lab reports, and the like. These assessments are relatively simple to grade, but they often leave limited room for students to explore their interests. This semester, consider experimenting with different types of assessments that could spark your students passions. For example, in addition to a book report, you could have your students select one of the following assessments: Create a comic inspired by the source text. Write a brief play that explores one characters motivations. Encourage questions, which open up possibilities into learning, rather than answers, which can sometimes preclude nuances and a depth of understanding.
